A friend of mine used to hop on the subway and play music with his two buddies, just for the sole purpose of making someone smile. Making their commute to work just a little more tolerable. And because they weren’t asking anyone for money, it was ‘technically’ allowed. Ok, it probably wasn’t allowed, but they weren’t hurting anyone and they were sharing their creativity with the world.
A sure-fire way to feel awesome about yourself is to go and make someone else’s day. Selfish? Maybe. But as Oprah says “Helping others is the way we help ourselves”. It takes the focus off of you and puts it on someone else. If you’re having a down day, this instantly changes your mood and gives you a great sense of accomplishment.
Share your creativity and your gifts with others and you’ll make this world a better place.
If you’re a cook or you love to bake: cook something or bake something and take it to your elderly neighbour who might be struggling with money for their next meal.
If you love to draw, paint or sketch: give one of your works of art to someone you know loves what you do.
If you’re a gamer: share your super skills on YouTube to help others master the latest video game.
If you’re a singer: record your gorgeous voice on video and post it for the world to hear. Music is universally healing and we all need a good dose of that right now.
If you’re a numbers guy or gal: is there someone you can help by building a spreadsheet that gets their finances back on track?
You likely have a skill, talent or ability that comes to mind right now for you – if so, go share that with someone to make their day!
If you’re struggling to come up with a way to help someone today, try one of these:
- pick up the phone and call a friend you haven’t talked to in ages. They’ll be happy for one less text message.
- offer to clean the house (or just the cat litter box) so your mom doesn’t have to do it today.
- research how you can ‘virtually’ volunteer right now.
And as Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve”. Go and make someone’s day.
